A clearer financial decision

If my income stopped for 6–12 months, what would happen?

Start with the bills that would continue, subtract dependable income that would remain, and compare the shortfall with accessible cash. Then check how any benefits change that picture over time.

“I have savings—why would I need disability insurance?”

Savings may be enough for a short interruption. The decision changes when an illness lasts longer, costs increase or savings are already earmarked for a home or retirement. Disability insurance can transfer part of a longer income risk, but it has premiums, limits and conditions. A large accessible reserve and reliable continuing income may reduce the need.

The waiting period matters as much as the benefit

Review when payments can start, how long they can continue, the definition of disability, exclusions, offsets for other benefits and whether payments would be taxable. An inability to perform your usual job does not automatically qualify under every contract. Confirm the actual wording rather than relying on a label such as own occupation.

Health coverage is not a replacement paycheque

Health and dental benefits help with eligible expenses. Critical illness coverage may pay a lump sum for a covered diagnosis that meets its conditions. Disability insurance may pay a periodic income benefit when illness or injury meets the disability definition. None should be assumed to pay simply because you are away from work.

For an owner, separate home from business

Your household may need income while the business still owes rent, payroll or loan payments. Personal disability coverage and business overhead coverage address different needs. Ask which earnings can be insured and which business expenses qualify; company revenue is not the same as your insurable personal income.

A simple example

A $3,000 monthly shortfall uses $18,000 in six months or $36,000 in twelve. If a qualifying benefit begins later, model the first months separately from the months after payments start. Do not assume a benefit until its eligibility and amount are confirmed.

Questions to take into a conversation

  • How many months can accessible savings cover?
  • What income would continue if I could not work?
  • Could I still meet both household and business commitments?
