A clearer financial decision

Am I financially protected—or do I only think I am?

The useful question is not how many policies you own. It is whether the money available, the timing and the conditions match the bills your household would still face.

“I already have coverage through work.”

That may cover an important part of your needs. Get the benefit booklet and confirm the life insurance amount, disability benefit limit, waiting period, exclusions and what happens when employment ends. A percentage of salary may be capped, and the amount deposited after tax may differ from the headline benefit.

Match each resource to a specific problem

Make three lists: bills during an illness, debts and family support after a death, and costs that could arise during recovery. Emergency savings can bridge a delay. Disability insurance may replace part of earned income when you meet the policy definition. Critical illness coverage may pay for a qualifying diagnosis under its terms. Life insurance addresses death. These are different triggers, so do not add them together as if they all pay at once.

Does paying off the mortgage solve everything?

It removes a major obligation, but food, property tax, childcare and other costs continue. Confirm who receives any mortgage-related benefit and whether the amount declines with the loan. When estimating needs, avoid counting both a full mortgage payoff and years of the same mortgage payments.

When more coverage may not be necessary

Existing benefits and accessible assets may already cover the identified shortfall. A needs review can support keeping what you have. Before replacing a policy, compare exclusions, costs and any new underwriting; do not cancel existing protection before replacement coverage is confirmed.

A simple example

If the household needs $4,500 a month and continuing income is $2,000, the gap is $2,500. An accessible $15,000 reserve covers six months of that gap, before unexpected costs. It does not establish whether a claim would be payable.

Questions to take into a conversation

  • What would pay, to whom, and how soon?
  • Which benefits end or change if I leave my job?
  • Which assets can my family actually access without disrupting another goal?
