A clearer financial decision
What financial risks become personal when I own a business?
When your earnings and wealth depend on the same business, a single disruption can reach several parts of your life. Map who needs money and who can make decisions if you or a key person cannot work.

“The company has cash, so my family is covered.”
Company cash may already be committed to tax, payroll, suppliers or debt. It also belongs to the company; moving it to you can have tax consequences. Identify personal reserves separately and ask your accountant how money could be accessed during an interruption.
Separate three needs
Your household needs income. The company may need overhead funding or a replacement for a key employee. Co-owners may need money to buy an ownership interest. Personal disability insurance, eligible business overhead coverage, key-person protection and buy-sell funding address different obligations. One policy should not be assumed to meet all of them.
A funded agreement still needs workable terms
Ask your lawyer what happens on disability, death, retirement or a dispute. Who can act, how is the business valued and when must payment occur? Insurance can provide funding for an insured event, but it does not write an agreement or cover every exit. Ownership, beneficiary choices and agreement terms need to align.
Some risks need operational solutions
Document processes, delegate authority, reduce dependence on one client and maintain accessible reserves. If a short absence can be absorbed through cash and trained colleagues, additional insurance for that exposure may be less important. Personal guarantees and loan covenants deserve a separate legal review.
A simple example
If an owner’s household has a $3,000 monthly gap and the business has $7,000 of unavoidable monthly overhead, the two needs total $10,000—but they belong to different parties. A $3,000 personal benefit would not automatically fund the company’s remaining bills.
Questions to take into a conversation
- Who can run and sign for the business during my absence?
- Which bills continue without revenue?
- What does the shareholder agreement require and how would it be funded?
